Being around Murphy is definitely an experience. He is full of beans, all over the shop and going at 100mph. Murphy is a lovely mixed breed made up mostly of Spaniel, although as he is still young we won’t know his exact mix until he is fully grown. With his all-black coat and eyes that look like butter wouldn’t melt, his cuteness is the perfect cover for getting away with all kinds of mischief.
Murphy came to us after we were contacted by social services, as he was being kept in a home that was not suitable for him. He arrived with zero training, no socialisation skills and no boundaries. He was climbing the walls with frustration. At just 10 months old he is still very much a puppy and needed nurturing and guidance to help him grow. Thankfully, now that he is with us in our Nottinghamshire kennels, he is already showing so much positive change.
When Murphy first arrived he didn’t know how to walk on a lead or how to interact appropriately with other dogs. He is now learning his manners and is soaking up all the training we are giving him. He does like to push his luck with other dogs and will need to learn to manage his enthusiasm before he gets a telling-off from someone much bigger than him! Being part Spaniel means he is an intelligent boy with plenty to learn.
Murphy has come on leaps and bounds after being with us for only a few days. His forever home will need to continue the work we have started. Boundaries, routine and training will be Murphy’s magic three when he moves into a new home. The last thing we want is for him to fall back into bad habits.
Murphy could live with another dog, but he will need continued socialisation as he can come on a bit strong and assumes everyone wants to be his friend. Having a well-behaved dog in the home could help him learn the ropes. He would also be just as happy as the only dog, provided he has plenty of training, playtime and some enforced switch-off time.
He can be boisterous with children but has never shown any aggression. We think children aged 8 and over would be suitable, ideally with some previous experience of dogs. An active home would be perfect for Murphy so he can enjoy long walks and make the most of his exuberant personality.
Murphy is not suitable for a home with cats, as he does show a prey drive. For this reason, we would also advise against a home with small furries that he may mistake for chew toys. A tether toy on a string would be a great way to engage his chase instincts in a controlled way, allowing him to indulge his prey drive safely without any risk to other animals.
