Big Fred is one of our favourites, and it’s not hard to see why. His happy smile, big personality and affectionate nature make him a much-loved resident of our kennels. He is the perfect example of tall, dark and handsome, although he could perhaps work on being a little more suave with the ladies. Having been with us for a while now, it’s fair to say he’s been unlucky in love so far.

He was originally rescued from Romania after being pulled from a kill shelter. He has spent a little over 2 years with us, never finding his permanent home. His size can be intimidating to some, but big-dog lovers quickly realise that he’s really just a big, soppy softie. All of our staff are comfortable handling him as he walks well on the lead; however, he has shown a keen interest in birds and small furries, so a Gencon works best to keep him under control when he gets over-excited. We have put plenty of training into Big Fred so we would love to see his forever home follow this. We are happy to offer a handling session and plenty of follow-ups with his forever home.

Big Fred has never shared indoor space with another dog before, but this could be a possibility following a successful meet and greet. That said, we honestly think he has more than enough love to give on his own. He is neutral with unfamiliar dogs when out on walks, which is ideal. He has also made friends with the other resident dogs in the kennels, including his best friend and kennel neighbour, Colin. Mostly because Colin always shares his treats when he comes back from “day release”. Roast potatoes from the pub are his favourite.

While Big Fred can take his time to trust new people, it doesn’t take very long for him to warm up, he seems to be more trusting easily trusting of men, he is a proper “lad dog” so we can understand why. Our staff love sneaking into Big Fred’s kennel for a cuddle. He adores a good scratch and will usually paw at your arm if you have the audacity to stop fussing him for more than a few seconds. He is a leaner, resting his full weight against your side when you sit together. Big Fred is a happy lad who is almost always wagging his tail, so much so that last year he sadly had to have most of it removed after wagging it to the point where it repeatedly split. Thankfully, he hasn’t mourned the loss of his lovely long tail. In fact, having a shorter one just means it can wiggle and wag even faster, with no consequences at all!

As Big Fred has been with us for so long, a big change such as moving into a forever home may come as a surprise to him. We would therefore advise patience, structure and clear routines in his new home, along with plenty of time to decompress. We will be on board with his new owners throughout the process, ensuring that his next home truly is his forever one.
